Aloeswood
Aloeswood revered as the “foremost of all fragrances,” is formed through a unique process in which trees of the genus Aquilaria(Thymelaeaceae) produce resin in response to injury, which then matures over time into a precious, fragrant material—often called the “śarīra of wood.” This formation typically takes decades to even a century, and it has been said since ancient times that “one tael of aloeswood is worth one tael of gold.” It is not only a supreme incense and valuable ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine, but also carries profound cultural significance in the Eastern world.
In Buddhism and Taoism, aloeswood is regarded as a medium that connects the earthly and the divine, praised as “the only fragrance capable of traversing the three realms,” and is commonly used in worship, meditation, and space purification.
