SILK EMBROIDERY PAINTING
[Imperial Garden Ethereal Realm: Poetry and Painting in One Frame]
This work, “Eternal Spring Fairy Lodge,” uses silk threads as ink and brocade as xuan paper, recreating the ink charm of Emperor Qianlong’s inscribed poem and the colorful brushwork of the court painters stitch by stitch. The piece faithfully restores the original appearance of “Eternal Spring Fairy Lodge” from the Forty Scenes of the Old Summer Palace. On the left, Emperor Qianlong’s poem and Wang Youdun’s meticulous calligraphy are embroidered, while on the right, the “deep and serene architecture, winding corridors, and gracefully connected pavilions” depicted by court painters Leng Mei, Tang Dai, and Shen Yuan are brought to life with flat embroidery. Every plant, tree, pavilion,, and terrace is intricately interconnected, with a cohesive rhythm, creating within a limited space the imperial garden ambiance of “how deep, how deep, the courtyard’s deep embrace.” This is not merely an embroidery but a dialogue spanning over two centuries of court artistry.
[Historical Resonance, a Peach Blossom Spring on Paper]
Eternal Spring Fairy Lodge was once bestowed by Emperor Yongzheng to his fourth son, Hongli (the future Emperor Qianlong), as his residence. This work captures its appearance at its peak: it embodies both the opulence and exquisite craftsmanship of an imperial garden and the poetic ideal of a literati’s retreat. It is not only a heartfelt tribute to the “Garden of Gardens” lost to flames but also an eternal remembrance of the filial devotion and imperial memories encapsulated in the lines, “Where I once asked after my parents’ rest, and studied in the hall of bygone years.” Through contemporary, unparalleled embroidery artistry, it pays homage to ancient painting, calligraphy, architecture, and garden design, becoming a treasured carrier of multifaceted cultural heritage.
“A garden’s finest views held fast by the needle’s art, Half a volume of poems extended by the silk thread’s part.”
